In the midst of this circus of snowsrests the eldorado of tourists, Zermatt^ To look down from some loftysummit, upon this village with its oldChurch in the grave-yard of whichrepose the bodies of those, who havefallen victims to their temerity, ortheir duties, its ancient chalets, stand-ing side by side with the splendidmodern Hotels, makes a view mostcharming. The chief excursions which everyone should make from Zermatt, arethose of the Riffelalp, splendid Hotel,situated some distance above Zermatt,to the Riffelberg, with Hotel, situatedhigher than the Riffelalp, on the roadto the Gornergrat; or to the Gorner-grat itself, with its marvellous birdseye view of the Alps. All these excursions can be madeon mule. The Hotel du Lac Noir, situatedat the foot of the Matterhom, theGorges du Gorner, Staffelalp, areexcursions accessible to every one,whether on mules or carried in sedanchairs. Two other fine excursions are tothe Schwarzsee Hotel, with view ofthe Furgg Glacier and a trip to theTheodule Pass, also to the Staffelalp,a trip which can easily be accom-plished in a forenoon, if an early startis made. To the Findelen Glacier, inabout the same time as the preceding. ZUG. HOTELS: Hirschen; Lowen; Ochscn.Population 5161. A quaint old town,the capital of the smallest of the Swisscantons. Take dinner at the Res-taurant in the former Town Hall orRathhaus, and ask to see the roomcontaining wood carvings and localantiquities. The fish hatching estab-lishment is very interesting.
