THE FOOT IN (A) GORILLA,(B) MAN. After dissections bv H. C. Raven. In man the transverse adductor ofthe great toe is still present essentially in the anthropoid position though muchreduced. The oblique adductors of the great toe are well developed in both manand anthropoids. The abductor of the great toe is almost identical in man andanthropoids. The same is true of the abductor of the little toe Comparative Anatomy of the Sole of the Huvian Foot. The superficiallyhand-like appearance of the feet of the chimpanzee and gorilla was viewedin earlier times as an important and fundamental point of difference fromthe foot of man, but dissections of the sole musculature show that the footof the chimpanzee and of the gorilla is operated h\ muscles which cor-respond, not to the muscles of the human hand, but to those of the humanfoot (Fig. 18). In brief, the musculature as well as the skeleton of thehuman foot is fundamentally of the biramous anthropoid type. (140) IMKODLCnON K) IllMW AW r()\n
