Summary

[edit]
Description
English: c/n 355

Built in 1936, specifically for the Gulf Oil Company. Flown exclusively by Major Alfred ‘Al’ Williams, it was displayed at events across the United States, carrying out precision aerobatics and demonstrating the then new technique of dive bombing. During a European tour in 1938 it visited England, France, Holland and Germany and while in Germany it was flown by WW1 ace Ernst Udet, in return for which Williams was allowed to fly a Bf109, the first American to do so. During WW2 the Gulfhawk was used for testing new fuels, oils and lubricants but in 1943 it carried out a 3-month tour of training fields at the request of General ‘Hap’ Arnold, to demonstrate precision flying and aerobatics. Finally, in November 1948, it was flown to Washington National Airport and donated to the Smithsonian Institute. It is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
