English: Greenala Point View east showing the top of a 50m high cliff with ditch and embankment of an ?Iron Age promontory fort (top left).
Layers of sandstone (grey and lighter red) alternate with brighter red siltstones and mudstones. These are part of the sequence referred to as the Old Red Sandstone (ORS). Although the layers appear horizontal from this viewpoint, from the sea it is obvious that they dip northwards (an example of 'apparent dip' of bedding). Erosion of the cliffs occurs mainly along vertical fractures (joints). Small sea stacks are visible at the base of the cliffs. The coastal slope in the foreground is a remnant of an earlier landscape (part of a valley) which is being eroded by the sea ('slope over wall' cliff profile). |
