| Description |
A look west toward the Great Salt Lake, from the Wasatch Foothills. My location is the new Natural History Museum of Utah, located on the University of Utah campus. It is an excellent museum, with emphasis on the dinosaur fossils; it is also one of the few good secular cultural institutions in the Salt Lake City area. Downtown Salt Lake City is relatively near, the airport is a bit farther out to the right, and beyond it is the lake. To the left can be seen the Kennecott Smokestack, which at 1,215 feet high is the tallest freestanding structure in western USA. It serves a copper mine nearby. At the end of the Ice Age, the Salt Lake Valley was covered by Lake Bonneville, whose water level was at the top of the smokestack; the Great Salt Lake, and Utah Lake to the south near Provo, are the shallow remnants of Lake Bonneville. |
