But if he rarely excited enthusiasmamong his own people, his associates, on the other hand,felt for him warm friendship, and some old colleagues,who had passed through the stormy and precarious timesof the small Parnellite group, passionate devotion. He was quite free from pretence or self-conceit; indeed,he was modest and almost self-depreciatory. His defectsas a political leader and speaker were partly due to asomewhat rigid mind and a certain obstinacy of view.He lacked adroitness and suppleness either of mind or ofspeech ; he had not the passionate temper that respondsquickly to a nation so quick-tempered and so incalculableas the Irish people. MAJOR WILLIE REDMOND MAJOR WILLIE REDMOND, brother of JohnRedmond who succeeded Parnell as chairman ofthe nationalist parliamentary party, was born at Wexfordin 1861. The Redmonds were one of the few familiesamong the Irish landed gentry who had remained trueto Catholicism. Penal laws, imprisonments and socialdegradation had almost completely succeeded in makingCatholicism and poverty synonymous in Ireland. Willie Redmonds education resembled that of allthe sons of tolerably well-to-do Irish catholics. Patriotismdecided his career. He had been nurtured in the ancientfaith and nationalism and, though coming from the pro-pertied class himself, the well-being of the poor farmersand labourers who were his compatriots was more to himthan any rewards which an alien government in controlof his native country could bestow upon him. He became a champion of the oppressed. He entered public life as representative of East Clarein 1892, and
