Description

Shales in the Devonian of Ohio, USA.

This is an outcrop of the Bedford Shale in Ohio. Bedford outcrops are scarce, because the rocks are soft and outcrops weather and vegetate over relatively quickly. The Bedford is part of a coarsening-upward succession that starts with the Olentangy Shale, followed by the Ohio Shale, the Bedford Shale, and the Berea Sandstone. The Bedford Shale is Famennian in age (= upper Upper Devonian). It consists of soft, grayish and reddish clayshales with minor interbeds of coarser-grained siliciclastics.
