Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gravestones and lavender, Christ Church Some of the gravestones have been placed against the church wall. Lavender grows in several places around the churchyard. Lavender has many uses and is one of the best known and loved of the herbs grown in this country. Lavender for drying should be cut when about half the blooms on the spike are expanded otherwise some may discolour or drop before all are in bloom. It is easier to rub the dried blooms off the stalks if all the flower heads are kept facing one way. A small posy of lavender spikes pressed now and then to release the oil is an effective insect repellent. The florets can be used in salads and tisane made from lavender, fresh or dried, is a pleasant mild sedative. Lavender oil has many commercial uses in perfumery.
