Summary[edit]

Description
English: On 19 June, 1916, the protection of soldiers’ graves at Gallipoli was raised at the British seat of government at 10 Downing St, London.

A letter was written to the New Zealand Governor Lord Liverpool advising of concerns initiated by the French government which was “requesting the good offices of the Embassy in arranging with the Imperial Ottoman Government for the protection against profanation of the burial places of French soldiers on the Gallipoli Peninsula.”

The British Government lent its voice to this appeal, and New Zealand and other countries were duly advised by official despatch from London. Turkish War Office investigations showed that many graves had vanished from the landscape as burials in the early part of the campaign had been haphazard, while later many marked graves lost their identification when wooden crosses were used as firewood. There had been some grave robbing too, although fences had been built in some areas to curb this practice.

Helles Memorial, Lone Pine Cemetery and Chunuk Bair Cemetery today commemorate the great numbers of war dead of Gallipoli.
