Summary[edit]

Description

(public display, Limper Geology Museum, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, USA)

Marble is a crystalline-textured, calcitic, intermediate- to high-grade metamorphic rock. It forms by intense alteration of limestone.

From exhibit signage:

Graphitic Marble

This marble contains a number of different minerals. The mineral graphite is visible as small black flakes with a shiny, metallis luster. It is derived from the metamorphism of carbon bearing material. Also visible are small gold colored pyrite crystals, dark flakes of phlogopite, and small brown/black magnetite crystals.

The presence of the two minerals, pyrite and magnetite indicate that this marble is the product of contact metamorphism. Contact metamorphism results when heat and mineral laden fluids are produced by a nearby igneous body which cause the alteration of surrounding rock.

Collecting locality unknown.
