Ancient Egyptian granite anthropoid sarcophagus lid, depicting the priest Nesisut, ‘Keeper of the Storehouse’ and ‘Servant of the King’.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Nesisut was a priest in the city of Memphis who held the titles

"servant of the king" and "keeper of the storehouse." His sarcophagus lid depicts him with a serene, idealized face, wearing a traditional false beard and a wig with sections falling over the shoulders. In earlier periods, false beards were reserved for rulers because they signified divine status, but by the Saite period they were also worn by nonroyal individuals in funerary art, associating the deceased with the netherworld god Osiris.

Unfortunately, it's impossible for the camera to pick up the very shallow relief carvings on this anthropoid sarcophagus, which shows the goddess Nut on her knees, her arms and wings spreading out to cover the lid from side to side; below that are rows of hieroglyphic text.

Found in Giza, in the so-called 'Campbell's Tomb', aka Giza Mastaba G 9500, of Pakap Wehebre-emakhet, aka Lepsius Giza 84 (L.G.84). Digital Giza link: giza.fas.harvard.edu/sites/1824/full/.
