General-Yulewithdrew the British forces to Lady-smith, and this town was besieged.The troops at Ladysmith, under com-mand of General White, resisted their• foe bravely, repulsed several attacks,and the garrison, consisting at first of12,000 men, together with the residentsof the town, was reduced to sore straitsand suffered great privations. General Buller and British troopsattempting to force their way to Lady-smith, to relieve the besieged town,met with several disastrous repulsesand were forced back to the south sideof the Tugela River.
