Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Grain barges moored at Healing's Mill. The grain barges, Chaceley and Tirley have been moored on the Old Avon beside Healing's Mill for many years. Redundant for a number of years they used to ship grain up the River Severn from Avonmouth. Until the 1960s when the M5 was extended to Bristol the River Severn was a major route for cargo and oil barges. On more than one occasion large barges inflicted catastrophic damage to bridges after colliding with them, for example, bringing down the Severn railway bridge near Sharpness, and Haw Bridge between Tewkesbury and Gloucester.
