Summary[edit]

Description It is not a well known fact, but the fire set to the royal palaces at Persepolis did not destroy the place, although it destroyed the royal palaces. Persepolis was still used by the Greeks, as Diodorus reports that Peucestes, a satrap, did sacrifice in memoriam of Alexander's father Philip of Macedonia. Post achaemenian construction using the stones left by the ruins were revealed on the terrace, fire altars used by the Frataradas (fire priests) were found around, and Sasanian pehlevi writings or graffities were found, as this one. The graffiti shows a sassanian knight on the front wall of persepolis museum testifying of the Sasanian use of the place. After being arsoned, Persepolis loosed its political importance but the city was stil alive, until the developpement of Ishtakr, Sasanian city in its neighborhood. As Ishtakr was growing, Persepolis really died as the populations moved. Untill our days.
