This basin is madeof light sheet metal, and is so shaped as to reston the thighs of the patient (Fig. 8). Eecentlya collapsible model has been introduced (Fig. 10)which is made of sheet rubber and which can befolded up and carried in the surgeons bag. The catheter should never be used in acuteurethritis as the method of choice. The introduc-tion of a foreign body into the highly inflamed andtender urethra, is not only unsurgical, but absolutelyunnecessary. It can be avoided, and should there-fore be discarded. Inthose instances, the smallest possible caliberedcatheter might be used, and the utmost gentlenessshould characterize its insertion and removal.
