The Manor of Goudbeyete was given as a wedding present to Emma, daughter of Richard, Duke of Normandy in 1012 after she married Ethelred the Unready. The name Goudbeyete is thought to mean "the goods getter". See http://www.cityofwinchester.co.uk/history/html/godbegot.html |
