(left) A rather rare form of Kali, the goddess of wilderness and (right) a nude aspect of Sitala, the goddess of fever, both being local guardian deities of districts in North Bengal, India.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Left: Kali is a ferocious representation of nature. Her wildness catches the glimpse of many. She comes from the cremation grounds, abodes of Tantrik rituals, of Bengal. Usually depicted with four hands, here the vernacular goddess possesses not more than two. She holds a cup of blood in her left hand and swings her sickle in another. She is accompanied by two demonesses who share her iconography and are drenched in blood. She stands on her husband, Shiva, the deity of Yogis (sages).

Right: Her sister goddess, the guardian deity of many villages of Bengal, Sitala rides a donkey with a broom and a pot of water in her hand swiping out the existence of diseases from the face of humanity. Usually she is not depicted nude, but in the hamlets of North Bengal she is. Compared to Kali she is whiter than milk. Her presence graces humanity with fearlessness from fatal fevers.

These goddesses are embedded in the nerves of Indian religion yet they thrive to be local deities unknown to other parts of the country. Rituals vary from town to town, from village to village, from state to state in India, but the believe stays constant.
