Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gneiss at Uig Sands, Lewis An intrusion of Lewissian Gneiss into Torridean sandstone facing the large sandy beach at Uig. Gneiss is very old (c3,000 million years), is metamorphic (changed by heat and pressure deep under the earth) and polycyclic (gone deep then surfaced many times). It underlay the range of Himalayan-height mountains that once lay where the Outer Hebrides now are, but were then eroded to sea level. Many beaches in Lewis are covered with smooth rounded boulders of Lewissian gneiss, showing pink and black stripes most attractively.
