Summary[edit]

Description Being a frequent flier and interested in optics means that I often see glories. They are due to sunlight almost turned 180 degrees around by cloud droplets, producing colorful rings and a circle of light around the airplane shadow. This is not due to normal reflection or refraction as in rainbows and halos, but is thought to result from surface wave effects that allow light striking the edge of droplets to bend around the droplet. The optics gets rather involved, as seen in www.philiplaven.com/p2c1a.html
