Summary[edit]

Description
  • English: Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931), "Herminius" (Self-portrait as a gladiator, in the Greek theatre at Taormina). Catalogue number: 0108 B. Formerly in the Texbraun collection, courtesy Galerie David Guiraud, Paris. Stamped and dated: "Deponirt - 1 Aug 1900", but the images was shot within 1893, when another pose including Gloeden in the same attire was published in the article by Ludwig Pietsch (1824-1911), Kunst und Photographie, on the "Velhagen & Klasings Monatshefte", 1893-94, p. 393. No famous gladiator from antiquity was called "Herminius", perhaps the titles hints at a historical novel from that period?
Date Within 1893.
