Español: Figura 1. Anatomía celular del estómago.

El estómago humano se compone de tres regiones distintas: el cardias, el cuerpo y el antro.
El cardias gástrico reside en la porción más proximal del estómago humano. El corpus contiene las glándulas oxínticas que albergan una región progenitora en el istmo y contiene la mayoría de las células parietales secretoras de ácido y las células principales secretoras de pepsinógeno. Las glándulas del cuerpo contienen únicamente células X secretoras de grelina. Las glándulas antrales son predominantemente glándulas secretoras de moco y albergan únicamente las células G que expresan gastrina.

Es importante señalar que, en el estómago humano, el antro contiene una mezcla de glándulas oxínticas y antrales; sin embargo, las glándulas de tipo oxíntico en el antro tienen significativamente menos células principales y células parietales en comparación con las glándulas del cuerpo.
