Summary[edit]

Description
English: Keep quiet! The enemy listens (Italian: Tacete! Il nemico vi ascolta)
(...) In the preceding months [in the beginning of 1941], the Italian navy had suffered heavy losses (...) Four short films (...) focused on the same message: silence was the best weapon against espionage and sabotage. The newsreels then all adopted the image of the monstrous ear and the same slogan: "Be quiet, the enemy is listening! Be quiet!"
During Italy's fascist participation in World War II, not only the newsreels, but also other media conveyed the same message. The figure of the giant ear was in fact a visual citation from a poster by Gino Boccasile, one of the most fervent and prolific illustrators of fascist propaganda. In 1941, he created a poster in which the head with helmet of a British soldier figured in the act of extending the ear towards the spectator, the right hand to orient the pavilion towards the foreground of the image. The slogan "The enemy is listening. Be quiet!" was superimposed on the image with large and lively brushstrokes.
Italiano: Tacete! Il Nemico vi ascolta.
