Summary[edit]

Description

This portrait has been variously identified as Drusus Major, younger brother of Tiberius, as Germanicus (15 BC - 19 AD) son of Drusus and nephew of Tiberius, or as Drusus Minor (13 BC – 23 AD), son Tiberius and Vipsania Agrippina. The resemblance between them, and the similarity of their physical features, make identification difficult,

In recent times, following the progress of the studies on the iconography of the Julio-Claudian princes, this portrait has been definitively identified as Germanicus, [Stemma Drusorum N. 13], adopted by Tiberius in 4 DC, and his successor designate, along with Drusus Minor. Crucial evidence is the pattern of the hair wisps carved on the front of Germanicus. This portrait was probably carved according a model created between 15 and 19 AD (the so-called Bèziers prototype). It was often used to create sculptural Germanicus’ images "post-mortem".
