| Description |
This view is from INSIDE the Rock of Gibraltar, looking over the frontier, into Spain. The Rock is 2.6 sq miles (6.7 km2) big but has approximately 34 miles, 52 km of tunnels inside! Some tunnels have holes to the outside that would allow cannons, or later, large guns to fire upon attackers. Here we see through one of those apertures, looking over the runway and terminal of Gibraltar Airport, and immediately beyond, Spain. For many years Spain has laid claim to the very important Rock of Gibraltar (and the town) which commands a strategic position over all shipping that passes through the relatively narrow waters in and out of the Mediterranean. |
