| Description |
English: Looking from the center of the Union lines toward the Confederate lines, at the Gettysburg Civil War battlefield. The Confederates were massed in the trees in the distance, about three-quarters of a mile (1,200 m) away. The Virginia Monument, barelhy visible at the left, marks the center of their position.
On July 3, 1863, the third and final day of the battle, the Confederates tried to cross the field and storm the Union lines. It is usually called Pickett's Charge, after the general who led the center of the Confederate force. About 12,000 troops made the assault. Only a few got inside the Union lines, marked by this stone wall, and they were all killed or captured. Over 1,100 Confederate soldiers were killed in Pickett's Charge, and 5,000 more were wounded or captured. The monument at the right represents the battery that defended this area. I cannot read the name, but the left side says that 4 were killed and 24 wounded. Murphman61 and others have identified it as Battery A, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery, called "Arnold's Battery" after its commanding officer, Capt. William Arnold. |
