| Description |
English: Looking from the Virginia Monument, at center of the Confederate lines, toward the Union lines at the Gettysburg Civil War battlefield. The center of the Union lines was in the groups of trees at the right, about three-quarters of a mile (1,200 m) away. This photo is geotagged with the camera location on the Confederate advance.
On July 3, 1863, the third and final day of the battle, the Confederates tried to cross the field and storm the Union lines. It is usually called Pickett's Charge, after the general who led the center of the Confederate force. About 12,000 troops made the assault. Only a few got inside the Union lines, marked by this stone wall, and they were all killed or captured. Over 1,100 Confederate soldiers were killed in Pickett's Charge, and 5,000 more were wounded or captured. I took this photo in September.
