| Description |
English: Looking at the center of the Union lines at the Gettysburg Civil War battlefield. The key point was called The Angle or Bloody Angle. I had walked most of the distance from the Confederate lines when I took this photo.
On July 3, 1863, the third and final day of the battle, the Confederates tried to cross the field and storm the Union lines. It is usually called Pickett's Charge, after the general who led the center of the Confederate force. The distance was about three-quarters of a mile (1,200 m). About 12,000 troops made the assault. Only a few got inside the Union lines, marked by a stone wall, and they were all killed or captured. Over 1,100 Confederate soldiers were killed in Pickett's Charge, and 5,000 more were wounded or captured. |
