Title
Plaque with a Battle of Naked Men over the Abduction of a Woman
Description
English: This plaque is carved in low relief. It has a small hole at either end, and was probably made to decorate a small casket. It is based rather closely on an engraving by Barthel Beham (Hollstein 73) that bears the title in the plate "RAPTUS / HELENAE" (The Abduction of Helen); however the subject is clearly not the abduction of Queen Helen by the Trojan Prince Paris (which would call for princely attire) but a "battle of wild men," itself a popular subject in the 1500s but one that did not have such classical pretentions as one involving famous historical figures. The men carrying out the abduction have the African facial features typical for male satyrs to make them look wilder for contemporary audiences.
