I ARRHYTHMIA 173 ventricle or there may be complete dissociation between auricleand ventricle, the latter following a rhythm of its own. Thisis termed complete heart block. The impairment of the bundle of His may be due to seniledegeneration, syphilis, toxemias, or it may be of neuroticorigin. The independent rate of contraction of the ventriclesis from twenty-three to twenty-eight per minute; if the heart beatdoes not exceed this number there is a complete block. InBishops case in which there was a calcareous nodule in theregion of the bundle of His the heart rate ranged from thirty-eight and forty on the first day to twenty on the last day.When transmittory arrhythmia is associated with epileptiformattacks it forms Adams-Stokes disease.
