Between this downward and backward pressiure of thesacrum and the upward pressure exerted by the femurs the wholepelvis becomes vertically compressed and horizontally expanded. The width of the pelvis is apparently increased still more throughwaste of the glutei muscles and through changes in the neck ofthe femur which bring the greater trochanter higher and furtherout. The ilia become thin, the pubes undergoes osteporosis andlate in life wastes, the acetabtdi become shallow and largerthrough the waste of the surrounding bone. Osteoporosis destroys thearrangement of the cancellous structure of the neck, the bonebeing thereby weakened, thus accounting for the frequency offracture of the neck of the femur in old age. Other changes inthe femur are such as occur in all long bones. Broken-downarches of the feet are found generally in the aged. It may bequestioned whether this is a physiological or a pathologicalcondition in old age. It is due to the downward pressure uponthe feet and weakness of the tendons, and frequently to impropershoes. The cartilage changes are waste, ossification, calcificatigeriatricsdisea00nasc
