  • Description: Unique lifetime miniature watercolor portrait of George Washington on bone written by an outstanding American artist, Charles Willson Peale, around 1775-76 during United States War of Independence. In these years, the future 1st US President George Washington was the Chief of the General of the Continental Army. The miniature was in a collection of a noble Polish aristocrat, Alexandra Vodyaevoy in Moscow, during the Russian Empire between 1890 and 1910. Her descendants, who inherited the miniature, immigrated to Poland in the early twentieth century, and then to the United States. In fact the export miniatures were documented by the Polish authorities in 1948. The uniqueness of this miniature is that it is a lifetime portrait of outstanding historical person, as well as important historical origins and high artistic quality. There is assumption that this miniature portrait was presented by George Washington to his comrade in the struggle for American independence, the famous Polish man of arms and politician Tadeusz Kosciuszko (Pol. Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko 1746-1817). We also know that Tadeusz Kosciuszko, from 1794 to 1796, was in prison after being injured and the defeat of the Russian troops in the Battle of Maciejowice. He was placed in the Petropalovskuyu fortress. In November 1796, immediately after the death of Catherine II, he was released by Emperor Paul I, who brought a loyal oath. Interestingly, a miniature portrait of George Washington created by Charles Willson Peale very close to the iconography of this miniature portrait, is in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts (USA), although it is clearly dated a few years later (1779), it was then a portrait from a private collection. At the moment, this miniature is in a private collection.
  • Format: Miniature portrait.
