Bush stands for a photograph with veterans of the 57th Bomb Wing from World War II on the South Portico Friday, Oct. 13, 2006. Approximately 10,800 airmen passed through the portals of the 57th Bomb Wing, a command composed of B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, during its time in combat from 1942 to 1945 in North Africa, Sicily, Corsica, and Italy. The B-25 Mitchell’s and their crews were known for their ability to take out bridges, gun positions, and for disrupting enemy troop communications. The 57th was nicknamed, “The Bridge Busters.” The members are in Washington, D.C., for their association's annual reunion Oct. 11-16, 2006. White House photo by Paul Morse | ||||||||||||||||
