Summary[edit]

Description

Amazingly, this 1938 Cadillac is the one in which he was killed in 1945 in Allied-occupied Germany when it hit a truck that pulled in front of it.

Actually, he was injured in the crash when his head hit a metal handle on the back of the front seat, and he died several days later of that injury. During that time, on his deathbed, he forgave both his driver and the driver of the truck, and they both went on with their military careers.

The hood and front fenders were destroyed, but the frame and front bumper were barely damaged. The front of the car was rebuilt with a 1939 front end by Cadillac France and put back into service as a staff car. In the late 50's it was finally retired and put into the Fort Knox Military Museum in Kentucky; this is its first appearance outside that museum since it was retired.
