Description	English: Portrait of Carl Schurz (1829-1906). He is in a martial outfit holding a cigar and riding whip in one hand and his other hand resting on his sword. He is wearing a fur cap and a long coat with an additional shawl-looking thing covering his shoulders.

In Carl Schurz's Reminiscences, this photo is identified as from his time as a major general. However, Rüdiger Wersich, in his bilingual (English and German) work Carl Schurz: Revolutionär und Staatsmann (Rastatt, Germany: Hebel Verlag, 1999), based on a copy of this photo sent to Bertha Ronge, Schurz's sister-in-law, on p. 115, says it was taken when Schurz was a brigadier general in Virginia.
