Willem Dudok schept voor arbeiders een meer dan fatsoenlijke woning. De tuinstadwijk in Hilversum biedt een complete leefomgeving aan gezinnen uit de laagste inkomensgroepen. Zelfs bijzondere functies zoals een openbare leeszaal verzorgt hij tot in detail. En de samenhang tussen architectuur en stedenbouw is meesterlijk. Deze eerste gemeentelijke woningbouw is het antwoord van de overheid op de woningnood, in een tijd dat particuliere opdrachtgevers het laten afweten. Het is één van de vroegste voorbeelden van het tuinstadideaal in de stedenbouw.

Willem Dudok created housing for workers that was more than decent. The garden-city district in Hilversum offers a complete living environment to families from the lowest income groups. He even devoted attention to the details of special functions such as a public reading room. Moreover, the relationship between architecture and town planning is masterly. This council housing was the government’s answer to the housing shortage, in a time when private developers were not forthcoming. It is one of the earliest examples of the garden-city ideal in Dutch town planning.
