Notes The prosperity of Dutch society led to a refined food culture, which become a theme of life painting. Nicolaes van Gelder depicts a table spread with an opulent arrangement of food, drink, glassware and other items that appeal to all the beholder's senses. A butterfly that has just alighted on the edge of the glass chalice enlivens the composition and at the same time, as a symbol of the human soul, makes reference to the transience of earthly pleasures.
