Summary[edit]
DescriptionGallery of Proposed U.S. Military Chaplain Insignias.jpg |
English: Images of proposed new insignias for U.S. military chaplains, to take the place of individual crosses, tablets, prayer wheels, crescents, etc., now worn by U.S. military chaplains. Resnicoff's proposal is based on the fear that as more and more religious groups provide chaplains for the military, and only a handful of individuals in the entire military wear any of these symbols (other than the Christian chaplains, whose cross will always be recognizable), many chaplains will not be recognized as chaplains. In addition, he says that the present insignia symbolize diversity but not unity: diversity of religious faith groups but not the unity of the Chaplain Corps. His recommendation is to include the Shepherd's Crook, the first official insignia for U.S. military chaplains (used from 1880-1888) to signify unity through this historic symbol, plus the individual faith group symbol for the chaplain wearing the insignia. Both of these symbols should be shown overlayed on an open book, symbolizing both the wisdom of religious faith represented by that chaplain, and the founding documents of our nation and its military, which provides foundation for the shared vision of our chaplains.
