Description

Martyrdom of Joseph and Hiram Smith in Carthage jail, June 27th, 1844 G.W. Fasel pinxit [e.g. painted it] ; on stone [e.g. turned into a lithograph] by C.G. Crehen ; print. by Nagel & Weingaertner, N.Y. Dedicated to the Reverend Orson Hyde

Note: This is a slightly unusual lithograph. Basically, it's a black and white lithograph with a second yellow-brown layer on top of it, giving it a bit of an extra tonal range, because the yellow can be a lot lighter than the black. I think these should be about the right colours, though this type of lithograph is unusual enough that I've only come across one or two before.

To see the two layers, look at the upper right, where you can see a slight mismatch between the layers that makes them very clear.
