Oktober 1927 in Danzig als Sohn einer Kaufmannsfamilie geboren. Er studierte Bildhauerei an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie und an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin. Ab 1955 nahm er regelmäßig an den Tagungen der Gruppe 47 teil. 1956 erschien sein erstes Buch, der Gedichtband „Die Vorzüge der Windhühner“. Mit dem Roman „Die Blechtrommel „ wurde er 1959 schlagartig berühmt: Neben seinen Romanen (Hundejahre, örtlich betäubt, Der Butt, Die Rättin, Ein weites Feld u.v.a.) entstehen Gedichtbände (Gleisdreieck, Ausgefragt, Letzte Tänze u.a.), Kurzprosa, Theaterspiele, Essays, Novellen (Katz und Maus, Im Krebsgang), Erzählungen (Das Treffen in Telgte, Unkenrufe, Aus dem Tagebuch einer Schnecke, Kopfgeburten oder die Deutschen sterben aus und Mein Jahrhundert) sowie autobiografische Werke (Beim Häuten der Zwiebel, Die Box, Grimms Wörter). Außerdem ist Grass als Zeichner, Grafiker und Bildhauer tätig, viele Bücher mit seinem bildkünstlerischen Werk sind seit 1986 erschienen. 1993 übernimmt der Steidl Verlag die Weltrechte am Werk von Günter Grass. Große Teile seines literarischen Werks hat der Autor für Hörbuch-Editionen selbst eingelesen.
