These women seemed to have worked intothese erections of hair the whole of their wealth withthe exception of their heavy brass necklets and anklets. The coiffures of these Pangwe women are real worksof art, and could scarcely be surpassed in extravagance.(Illus. 186-189, and coloured plate.) Most of themare shaped like the steel helmets of the Plantagenetperiod, and are adorned \vith mosaic patterns of beads,buttons, nails, and cowrie shells. From each temple aband of hair is brought forward and drawn throughthe pierced cartilages of the nose. Sometimes thesebands are so elaborately adorned with beads that at adistance they resemble a military chm-strap worn inthe English fashion. Each village has its own styleof hairdressing; for instance in one case I saw longplaits, six feet in length, adorned with cowrie-shellsand brass rings, and habitually worn tmsted roundthe neck.
