Summary[edit]

Description

The safe spaces build vulnerable girls’ self-esteem and give them a chance to build strong relationships with other girls in their community. Wongani met her closest friends through the safe space she attends. They encouraged her to go back to school after she had her baby boy last year.

“When I am with my friends we talk about our futures and how we hope they’ll be. We talk about how we can earn money so we can stay in school.”

Wongani’s mum is relieved that her daughter avoided marriage. “There is a lot of divorce,” she says. “Sometimes the girls are married for only a few months and then they get divorced, and then go and get married again. I want Wongani to finish her education and go to college. I would like her to become a doctor.”

Girls and women everywhere have the right to live free from violence and discrimination. Help end child, early and forced marriage in a generation. Take the pledge now: www.girlsummitpledge.com
