| Description |
English: Fretted limestone south of Fanore beach To those used to upland limestone pavements, planed flat by glaciers then eroded under a soil cover or exposed to meteoric precipitation, the littoral pavements of the Burren are fascinating. Here, corrosion takes place at high tide when the rock is fully submerged, producing fretted forms with undercuts, and few karren grooves. Corrasion plays its part too, of course, especially in winter when Atlantic surf will repeatedly wash sand and smaller rocks over the pavements. Well-developed and very flat-lying bedding, combined with a relatively constant sea level produces wide areas of very flat pavement without deep grikes, such as this one at the south end of Fanore beach. |
