Description	English: Beginning in the late 17th century, rigid fans were replaced by folding fans. They were usually made of light materials such as paper or parchment mounted on sticks of ivory, tortoiseshell, or wood. Fan painters often depicted historical, particularly classical scenes, such as this example in which the subject is an audience before a king.
