It will be noted that though Giulio Romano, to whom the play assigns the authorship of thestatue, is not known as a sculptor, the figure is spoken of as painted, which many sculptures, fromthe earliest times, have been. AMERICAN ART 207 Mr. Freer has acquired much favor with the public as a painter of pictures of beautifulwomen. Perhaps his most successful work is A Girl in Black, which was first shown at theNational Academy of Design in 1887, and afterwards sent to the exhibition of the BostonArt Club, by whom it was at once purchased for their permanent collection, and now holds anhonored place on the walls of their beautiful house. As with most of Mr. Freers pictures,his model in this case was his wife. Among his other works are Choosing a Study, whichis owned by Mr. Thomas B. Of thelast named, a charming girl, seated on a sofa and gazing at a rose in her hand, he has made alarge etching. He has also etched a plate of Miss Jennie Brownscombes picture, entitledHalcyon Days, and a number from his own designs, including Lady Bug and At Polling. Both ofthese are dry points, and the latter is a landscape subject. In the medium of water-color,Mr. Freer has done a great quantity of work, nor has he neglected black-and-white. He was born in Chicago in 1849, and studied abroad for a number of years, principally atthe Royal Bavarian Academy in Munich under Wagner and Diez, but also for some time inParis. In 1880 he left his native city and came East, finally settling in New York, and sendinghis first picture to the National Academy in 1881.
