Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fratercula arctica (English: Atlantic Puffin, Common Puffin; German: Papageitaucher; Finnish: Lunni; Norwegian: Lundefugl; Swedish: Lunnefågel; Icelandic: Lundi)
  • The Atlantic puffin, also known as the common puffin, is a seabird found in the Atlantic Ocean. It breeds in various regions including Russia, Iceland, Ireland, and more. Its distinctive appearance includes a black crown, white body, and a colorful red-and-black beak. Puffins dive underwater to catch fish and crabs for food. During winter, their bright colors fade, returning in spring. They nest in cliff colonies, laying a single egg. Chicks grow quickly and venture to the sea after about 6 weeks, staying away from land for years. They face aerial attacks from gulls and skuas. The puffin's charming traits have earned it nicknames like "clown of the sea" and "sea parrot." It's also the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

  • The Hornøya island off mainland Norway's easternmost point is included in the Varangerfjord Important Bird Area (IBA), designated as such by BirdLife International for its support of large numbers of waterbirds, seabirds and waders, either breeding or overwintering.
