Franz Josef Land is an archipelago in the far north of Russia. It consists of 191 islands covering an area of about 200 by 325 km, and has no native inhabitants.

Description

English: Franz Josef Land is an archipelago in the far north of Russia. It consists of 191 islands covering an area of about 200 by 325 km, and has no native inhabitants. Discovered in the mid-19th century, the archipelago has a population of about 1200, and is part of the Russian Arctic National Park. The ASTER images show the islands of Salisbury, Luigi, Champ, Ziegler; the images were acquired August 16 and 19, 2011, cover an area of 68 x 90 km, and are located at 81 degrees north latitude, 56.6 degrees east longitude.
