Summary[edit]

Description
English: Keybook photo (marked "r-12") of Frank Sinatra issued by United Artists in 1959. Per ImmortalEphemera.com, "keybook photos" were a type of comparatively rare (and today highly collectible) film still: "These stills were used as the studio’s masters, and are found with holes punched at the top of vertical poses or the left side of horizontal poses where they were inserted into the book." A color version of the same photo was used for the cover of numerous Sinatra records on Capitol/EMI in the 1960s, including the 1961 UK EP Songs from the Films 'The Joker Is Wild' & 'A Hole in the Head' and the UK pressing of the 1969 LP box set The Sinatra Touch.
Date
English: The photograph was printed with a copyright notice: "© 1959 United Artists Corporation". The photo may have been taken slightly earlier; in the Getty Images database, a photograph from the same session is dated "circa 1958".
Source
English: Scan via Heritage Auctions Lot #54145. Cropped and retouched by uploader; see unretouched image in upload history below.
Author
English: Published by United Artists. Photographer uncredited and unknown.
Permission
(Reusing this file)
English: The photograph was published in the United States with a valid copyright notice. However, its copyright term expired because it was published prior to 1964 but not renewed within 28 years of publication with the U.S. Copyright Office. See the Copyright Catalog (1978 to present).
NOTE: Although this black-and-white form of the photo entered the public domain, the color version of the same photograph is still under copyright. The color version of the photo can be found in the Getty Images database, where copyright is claimed by GAB Archive/Redferns.
This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications made by Blz 2049.

Licensing[edit]

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1963, and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart and the copyright renewal logs. Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
