GENEEAL PHILIP H. SHERIDAN. General Philip II. Sheridan, born at Albany, N. Y., in 1831, died in Nonquitt, Mass., August 5th, 1888, was a graduate of United states MilitaryAcademy at West Point; served in the Civil War. 1801-65 ; from army in Southwest Missouri was transferred to Army of the Cumberland; and forhis successful operations at the battle of Murfreesborough was made major general of Volunteers ; in the spring of 1864 took command of the cavalrycorps of the Army of the Potomac; was in the battle of the Wilderness ; and in the fall of 1864 was made major general ; in the spring of 1865,through his successful operations at the battle of Five Forks, and others, the Confederates were compelled to abandon Petersburg and Richmond ;present at the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox, April Sith, 1865. In 1869 he was made lieutenant general, and assigned to the commandcf the Missouri Division, with headquarters at Chicago. 113

GENERAL JOHN A. DIX. General Dix, born in Boscawen, N. H.. July Utl, 1798, died in New York city, April 21st, 1879. In December, 1812, he was appointed cadet, andgoing to Baltimore, aided his father, Major Timothy Dix of the Fourteenth United States Infantry. He was made ensign in 1813, and accompaniedhis regiment, taking part in the operations on the Canadian frontier. Subsequently he served in the Twenty-first Infantry at Fort Constitution, JN. ±1.,where he became second lieutenant in March, 1814; was adjutant to Colonel John D. B. Walback, and in August was transferred to the lhird Artillery.In 1819 he was appointed aid-de-camp to General Jacob Brown, then in command of the Northern Military Department, and stationed at Brownsville.At the beginning of the Civil War he took an active part in the formation of the Union Defense Committee, and was its first president.
