Description |
English: "A Dockyard at Wapping", oil on canvas by Francis Holman (active 1767-1790).
On the left is a ship on a slipway; left centre, a timber yard; right centre, a ship possibly in a dry dock; on the right, a pier with a group of human figures. In the background is the river wall with housing on top; building houses was officially encouraged from 1575 onwards to incentivise people to repair the wall thoroughly. Prior to that there had been a long history of breaches, flooding the land behind ("Wapping in the Wose" or Wapping Marsh). Once the wall was securely established (c.1600) there was an incentive to build facilities, such as these docks, out into the river. This image was uploaded to illustrate an article on the river walls of the Thames. The exposure has been slightly increased to clarify the detail. |
