Notes "Il dipinto era in origine collocato nel palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo nella Camera dei Medaglioni, dove ancora oggi si trova in deposito. Esaminando i personaggi ritratti e ipotizzando l'età dei due bambini, Venturi (1883) ne fissava la datazione tra la fine del 1638 e il 1639, una considerazione cronologica che lo indusse a negare il tradizionale riferimento a Justus Sustermans, in quanto il pittore fiammingo aveva lavorato per gli Este in anni successivi; notava inoltre differenze sul piano stilistico. Basandosi sui documenti ipotizzava quale artefice Nicolas Regnier, che nel 1639 riceveva cospicue somme dalla casse ducali. Ghidiglia Quintavalle (1963) riprendeva il nome di Sustermans, mentre la critica più recente ha preferito o astenersi dal fare nomi o ha recuperato il nome di Regnier come la Peruzzi (1987)" [1]
